Fulltime Observations

  • That went well. Bayern dominated from start to finish and were clinical finishing in the final third. A porous Union Berlin defense had no answers for Bayern’s quality.
  • Jamal Musiala played his first full match for Bayern since March. Hopefully his medical issues are back under control and he can continue his maturation into a world class footballer.
  • It was equally refreshing to see Serge Gnabry in his first action since the injury in April forced him to miss the World Cup. He didn’t do much in the game’s dying minutes but he just adds an extra component to Bayern’s incredible attack.
  • Michael Olise gets the exclamation point! He was sensational, scoring his first hat trick at Bayern in stunning fashion. He also set up both of Harry Kane’s goals.

Halftime Observations

  • Alphonso Davies is doing a great job tucking in between Luis Díaz and the central attackers. He is constantly shifting around the space and wreaking havoc on Union Berlin’s defensive shape. In completely unrelated news, Bayern created a turnover in that same corner that led directly to the opening goal.
  • Jamal Musiala scored in consecutive starts for the first time since November 2024. He is constantly attacking defenders with his dribbling skills while also playing confidently within Vincent Kompany’s passing system. Has the 23-year old finally figured it out? Watch out, y’all!
  • Bayern’s defensive press has suffocated Union Berlin, preventing Union Berlin from registering a single shot. It helps that Manuel Neuer is sliding into challenges at midfield.
  • The Oktoberfest kit is not attractive and looks like warmup gear. This is made even worse because Union Berlin is wearing a classic kit that is very Bayern-esque.

45’+2: Yellow card. Dayot Upamecano is booked for arguing a terrible call by the referee.

43’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 3-0. Jamal Musiala lays off a one-timer to Michael Olise for a beautiful curler.

42’: Yellow card. Rani Khedira is booked for shoving Jamal Musiala from behind.

39’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 2-0. Harry Kane buries the penalty kick. That is Kane’s 100th Bundesliga goal.

38’: Yellow card. Tom Rothe concedes a penalty kick by clipping Michael Olise in the box. Felix Uduokhai is booked for arguing the call.

30’: Luis Díaz chips the keeper but is correctly ruled offside.

Lineups are out! As many expected, Vincent Kompany is rolling out the champagne XI against Union Berlin. The manager will hope to have a big deal at halftime to preserve as many players as possible ahead of the international break.

Quick injury note (via @iMiaSanMia): Konrad Laimer is out of today’s game due to a minor adductor injury.

Ahead of the international window, Bayern Munich will host Union Berlin in the final Bundesliga matchday window this month. Bayern should be well rested from the tight 2-1 win over Elversberg last Sunday, but Vincent Kompany will be weary of exhausting players before they go play with their respective national teams.

Union Berlin’s new manager, Mauro Lustrinelli, has dealt with a brutal start to the season, needing two late goals to earn a draw against Eintracht Frankfurt before losing big to Leverkusen and Schalke. Union Berlin will need to pull a few rabbits out of the proverbial hat to earn Lustrinelli’s first Bundesliga win.

Prediction

Bayern wins 6-0. This one is going to get ugly. Harry Kane will score in the first 10 minutes on a turnover, ruining Union Berlin’s hopes of keeping it close. Michael Olise and Luis Díaz will each score in the first half before Kane gives Bayern a 4-0 lead at the break. Ismael Saibari and Jamal Musiala will add goals in the second half as Bayern heads into the weekend at the top of the table.
