With the young Bayern Munich goalkeeper receiving a call-up to Germany’s senior national team, Kompany offered a remarkably confident assessment of where he believes Urbig’s career is heading. The Bayern Munich boss made it clear that he sees the goalkeeper as much more than a promising backup for the future. “You also have to plan for the future. If anyone thinks Jonas won’t become number one in Germany, they’re making a big mistake. He’ll certainly be Germany’s number one at some point. It’s a sensible, very sound decision. Jonas has the right mentality. As a country, you have to develop your talent,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). That is quite the endorsement from Kompany, particularly considering the competition Urbig faces for the Germany No. 1 spot. Marc-André ter Stegen currently has the job under Jürgen Klopp, while Germany also has several other young goalkeepers pushing for opportunities. Urbig, however, has already earned the trust of Kompany at Bayern Munich and continues to develop alongside experienced goalkeeping figures such as Manuel Neuer. For Kompany, the Germany call-up is about more than simply rewarding Urbig for his recent progress. It is part of developing the next generation of German talent. Whether Urbig eventually becomes Germany’s No. 1 remains to be seen, but Kompany clearly believes the Bayern Munich goalkeeper has the mentality and ability to reach that level. According to Harry Kane, Kompany asked four players to give short speeches following the match: Kane, who reached 100 Bundesliga goals; Michael Olise, who scored his first hat-trick for Bayern Munich; Ismaël Saibari, who scored his first goal for the club; and Serge Gnabry, who made his return from injury. It was a fitting way to recognize a night that produced several individual milestones while also underlining the depth and togetherness within the squad. Kane apparently did not have to worry about being upstaged by Olise when it came to the length of the speeches. According to the England captain, Olise delivered the shortest address of the four. That might not be particularly surprising for anyone who has followed Olise since his arrival at Bayern Munich. The French winger tends to let his football do most of the talking, although Kane believes there is considerably more to Olise’s personality than what fans see publicly. Kane offered a revealing description of his teammate after the match. “I really enjoy playing with Michael, and I also like him a lot as a person. Not everyone gets to see his true personality, but he’s a great character. He’s completely different from how he comes across to people from the outside,” Kane remarked. That last part may be particularly interesting. Olise has developed a reputation for being quiet and reserved, but Kane’s comments suggest that his teammates see a much different side of him behind closed doors. For Kompany, creating moments like these could be just as important as the tactical work. Kane, Olise, Saibari and Gnabry all had something to celebrate, and giving each player a chance to address the squad helped turn an impressive team performance into a shared celebration.
