Diver airlifted to hospital after boat crash in Barnegat Bay, police say

A diver was airlifted to the hospital after a fishing boat on autopilot ran over the diver’s boat on Friday, July 31, New Jersey State Police said.

The crash happened around 9 miles off of Barnegat Township after a group of four divers anchored on top of a shipwreck, police said.

While two divers were in the water and two were on the boat, a 33’Gradywhite fishing boat at 25kts on autopilot ran the private dive boat over. According to police, one of the divers on the boat was able to avoid injury, but a second diver had to be airlifted to the hospital for gallons of water in his lungs and other injuries.

TowBoatUS Barnegat Light & Beach Haven, who towed both boats out of the water, shared images of the crash and said they hope everyone involved makes a speedy recovery.
