San Francisco is celebrating the opening of new businesses as part of a city program aimed at filling vacant storefronts and supporting business owners in neighborhoods such as the Tenderloin.
Niebla, a coffee shop and bookstore in the Tenderloin, is among the businesses opening with support from San Francisco’s Storefront Opportunity Grant Program. Another business, Sheba, is expected to open Friday.
“We have often said that every neighborhood needs a bookstore,” a Niebla representative said. “When opening Niebla, we found a home in the Tenderloin.”
The grant program provides between $50,000 and $100,000 to businesses with long-term leases.
The city has held two rounds of grants so far, with the latest round awarding funding to 38 businesses across San Francisco.
In the Tenderloin, eight storefronts are expected to open with support from the program.
